This 19th C. basket probably used for picking might have held something like apples or melons or something that had some weight to it. Look at the handle detail when the handle was crafted for the basket. On each side of the handle that also runs down and across the bottom of the basket is threaded with wire that is original to the construction. This was added for strength, and I have to say I have never seen a basket constructed exactly like this one. It's a wonderful example in good condition for a working basket of this age. Great to fill with whatever your heart desires. Quilts, pumpkins, wrapped Christmas presents, teddy bears, cloth dolls... Endless ideas.
